Some Thoughts About SGLI

If you're like the rest of today's military, you're covered under the government's SGLI program. Presently, the maximum coverage available to you is $400,000 at a cost of $29.00 per month. We applaud the measures to increase the maximum to $400,000 - it was the the right thing to do for the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces and we encourage you to take all the SGLI coverage you can afford. No doubt about it, SGLI is great coverage. As long as you're on active duty, we at ASMBA urge you take advantage of this remarkable program.

$400,000 sounds like a lot of coverage, BUT - is $400,000 REALLY enough for your loved ones should something happen to you? What would be left after final expenses, the mortgage balance was satisfied, credit cards and other loans paid off, money put aside for childcare and educational expenses, and daily living expenses were met? Not to mention "emergency expenses" such as an appliance breaking or auto repairs, and any hospital bills that your loved ones may also be facing? With the median price of a new home now around $220,000 (higher in some parts of the country), and the cost of college soaring annually, it's easy to see that $400,000 really doesn't go that far.

More importantly, you won't be in the service forever, and you'll lose your SGLI when you get out. Sure, you can convert it to the more expensive VGLI, but have you priced the equivalent cost of VGLI? It is not cheap. Why shouldn't you get the same competitive rates you enjoyed while you were on active duty? When you are changing careers and moving your family into a new home, you need to save every dollar you can, while still having great protection for your loved ones. That's where we come in! We can help lower your retirement money outlays while enabling you to provide more coverage to your family.

The Armed Services Mutual Benefit Association (ASMBA) provides comprehensive, affordable insurance coverage to military personnel and their families. ASMBA was established in 1963 by military personnel headed for Vietnam who wanted to provide for their families' security, but found they couldn't obtain insurance coverage because they were going into a war zone. They created ASMBA - a true non-profit fraternal military benefit association, which provides security and peace of mind for members of the Armed Services and their families. And since value of life is not determined by rank or branch of service, ASMBA's founders created life insurance plans available to all ranks of all services, during all times of peace or war, with no rank, duty, or geographical restrictions. We believed then, and still do today, that the men and women who serve our country deserve affordable protection - while they're on active duty, and when they leave the service.

Joining ASMBA today will guarantee your eligibility to apply for a variety of affordable insurance programs now, or when you get out of the service. And, when you join today, we'll give you $3,000 FREE AD&D coverage.

It's our way of saying "thanks" for serving our country.

Whatever you decide, make sure you know as much as you can about your SGLI, and what happens to it when you get out of the service. To learn more about your SGLI/VGLI benefits, visit:http://www.insurance.va.gov/sgliSite/default.htm
